The forest and riverside walks at Moncontour and surrounding villages are also to die for - with ancient lavoirs (wash houses) dotted along the riverside. And don't forget to watch out for the ancient catapult balls which can be seen in some of the gardens - one can be viewed along the riverside at Le Grand Saule Chambres d'Hotes in Moncontour. And if you're travelling by train, you can easily get the TGV from Poitiers, Angers or St Pierre near Tours and link up with Eurostar. I've used all of these methods and each has its advantage. Airlines, especially budget airlines, are fickle and cut routes seemingly at the drop of a hat. Regular flights and good competition between airlines also seem to keep flight costs down too.
